The Caribbean island is famous for its 365 beaches, one for every day of the year. From fine white sand to hidden coves with turquoise water, everyone can find their own perfect spot here.
But Antigua is far more than just a beach destination. The island is considered an absolute paradise for sailors. Steady trade winds, sheltered bays, and a deeply rooted maritime history make it one of the best sailing areas in the world. Anyone who has ever sailed along Antigua’s coastline immediately understands why so many sailors end up staying for good.
Antigua’s history was strongly shaped by the British, who occupied the island for many years. Sugar plantations once dominated the landscape, and from sugar came another important product: rum. Even today, old windmills, plantation ruins, and distilleries serve as reminders of this colonial past.
One of the island’s true highlights is English Harbour. This protected bay is considered one of the most beautiful natural harbours in the world. Surrounded by green hills and crystal-clear water, it once served as a strategic base for the British Navy. Today, historic sailing ships lie side by side with modern yachts — a place where history and the present blend seamlessly.

In my current Vlog, episode 14, I had the pleasure of visiting a long-time friend, Benedikt, who has been living in Antigua for over 15 years. After crossing the Atlantic by sailboat, he arrived here — and simply stayed. Sometimes you don’t choose a place; the place chooses you.
Benedikt took a great deal of time for me, showing me the island from a very personal perspective and allowing me to experience his everyday life. I am deeply grateful to him and his family for their openness, hospitality, and the wonderful time we spent together.
Antigua is more than palm trees and postcard views. It’s a place for dreamers, sailors, and adventurers — and for those who one day realize they don’t want to leave. Here is the link to the vlog from Antigua with Benedikt:
