Opium for the people: Hongkong (EN)

After my flight to Australia via Hong Kong, I decided to spend a few days in this city. Immediately you notice that there are a lot of people living in a small space. I arrived early in the morning and played on the streets of Hong Kong the same evening. It worked wonderfully and I noticed very positively that the police did not mind and just walked past me.

Hongkong, a metropolis. Here is a very rare view with only a few people on the street.

Especially interesting is the history of Hong Kong. The well-known Opium Wars between Great Britain and China are very exciting to read. It’s strange what the English came up with to do business with the Qing Dynasty. Today, one would say that the British were drug dealers back in that days. Ultimately, Britain has enforced opium imports by military force to promote colonial economic interests. After China lost the first Opium War (1842), China had to allow the drug trade again and give Hong Kong to England.

After the show I had time for some sightseeing, it’s a contrast: a traditional chinese boat in front of the impressive modern skyline

Anyway, this is past. A very special thank you to Novem Li and her family. She took extra time and showed me the city a bit closer. I know Novem Li from Curling, as we met in January at the Junior World Championships in Lohja (Finland).
